Not perfect, but quite good.
I needed a new carb for my '79 Mobylette. The old carb couldn't be repaired. It is widely recommended to convert to a Dellorto carb for these engines for better performance and reliability. That's not the direction I wanted to go. I wanted this vintage moped to be restored to it's original condition, with it's original carburetor, with as little modifications as possible. The negatives first: The filter housing is not good. It's made from weak, brittle plastic. The intake holes were partly blocked with mold flash, causing a rich running condition. Removing the paper thin flashing caused the thicker areas to break away as well. In the end, I was able to carefully Dremel what I needed to, so the intake was clear. After this, the mix was dead on, and the engine runs perfectly. The intake mounting flange has splits which are supposed to allow it to squeeze your intake under clamp pressure, however the slots were only partly there due to extra metal going there during casting. This wouldn't allow it to squeeze inward. The extra metal was thin, and after removed, allowed for tight clamping. The clamp that came with it wouldn't get small enough to clamp the carb on my intake. You could probably modify the clamp by grinding the stop on the clamp, but I used my original clamp, and it worked fine. The positive: Aside from those quirks, the carb is pretty much like a factory new Gurtner, and the moped starts and runs great. Original throttle and choke slides fit perfectly into the body. It's commonly agreed that there are "better" options, which will give you jetting flexibility and other performance advantages, but I am totally happy, having restored the bike to very close to original condition as the factory intended.
